In Chinese culture, the seventh lunar month is commonly known as “Ghost Month” and holds special significance. According to legend, on the first day of the seventh lunar month, the “Gate of Ghosts” to the underworld opens, allowing spirits suffering in hell to visit the human world and receive offerings from people.

By the end of the month, on the thirtieth day, the gate closes, and the spirits must return to the underworld. Because of this, the month is considered the time when “yin” energy is at its strongest.

(Zhongyuan Pudu)

The Hungry Ghost Festival, or Zhongyuan Pudu (中元普渡), is a very important traditional festival in Chinese culture, typically celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month. The main purpose of this ritual is to “pudu,” or save, the wandering ghosts and spirits who have no one to make offerings to them. Through these ceremonies, they receive food and other supplies so they do not linger in the human world.

(Pudu Rituals)

Pudu rituals are often grand and include preparing lavish offerings, burning incense and spirit money, ghost-grabbing (a ritual where people climb a pole to grab offerings), and floating water lanterns to guide spirits ashore.
